Research Topic

The problem during the ping pong matches is that some of the players are way too energetic to keep track of the score or even know whose turn it is to serve. To solve this, we want to transform our tennis table into a smart tennis table. Smart as in having one or more cameras surrounding the table that track the ball and project the score, penalties and what not with a beamer. Table tennis has a lot of convenient scoring mechanism that can be tracked with a camera, e.g. second bounce, ball out of bounce, etc.

Besides researching what’s possible with a camera and beamer, we’d love to see how this works in reality. In the end, the actual development will be done with a camera, beamer and Raspberry Pi. It’s up to the student to determine if other hardware is better.

You’ll be researching the hardware required to track a game of table tennis. Also, you’ll be writing software that can do the following:

  • Determine the location of the ball
  • Detect whether or not the ball fell out of bounds
  • How many times the ball bounced on the same side of the table
  • Apply other table tennis rules that aren’t listed here
  • Determine who wins the table tennis game
  • Project the score on the table
  • Determine serving speed
